Insignia NS-DXA1 Digital TV Converter Box Reviews

Product Rating: 4.5

The the original version of this product did not come with analog pass-through but the new version has now been upgraded and includes this extremely important feature.

Product Details: This converter box provides excellent picture quality that rivals that of the very best ones on the market. It is a huge upgrade over the average analog broadcast and only a slight step below DVD quality. The sound quality is also fantastic and rates out an on equal level to the top digital converter boxes in regards to sound quality. It sells for a very affordable price of roughly $60-$70, the only trick is finding it since it seems to be in such short supply. It's that type of world, one of the few companies that actually offers a fully featured box with great sound and picture quality and of course you can't hardly find it in stock anywhere.

Insignia NS-DXA1
Features: It has a far better than average programming guide that displays the show title, current show run time, and the next show run time for all other channels. It has a "set by program" aspect ratio option that we have not seen with any other converters yet. This means that it allows you can set the aspect ratio to a different setting for different channels, which could come in handy. The Insignia's major advantage when compared to all others is that it comes with a universal remote that can be programmed to work with the TV and converter box. It also comes with the ability to adjust the font style, size, and color for closed captioning. This converter box now includes analog pass-through.

The Insignia NS-DXA1 is one of the best converter boxes we have seen up to this point. It has the analog pass-through feature, great sound quality, and awesome picture quality. Unfortunately it has proven to be one that is hard to get your hands on with very few retailers carrying it. If you can find one I'd buy it ASAP before their gone

Update March 2014

"The Insignia now comes with analog passthrough and they no longer sell the model that did not. You can find it for $50.00 and it works great, good picture and sound, the guide is based on what the network is broadcasting and works great, if the network you are watching broadcast what the show/movie/game is about, our who is playing who? No need for the TV guide to see what's next."

"My Dad needed a converter box to go with his coupons, and the Insignia was available at Best Buy at the time. This box is the generic version of the Zenith, and shares the exact same features.
The towers were 40 miles away, and the reception was perfect on the rooftop antenna. The other box he bought was installed in a large shed surrounded by trees using only rabbit ears, and the reception was a little shakey but picked up all available stations. Impressive."

  1. Could you comment on why I lost some channels after I hooked up the box? They were coming in fine for awhile, and then Kapoot. I can't bring them back through auto or manual means. Also, the sound quality is very poor. I can't get the sound to project past 5 feet of the TV. Any way of turning it up? I am using the remote.

It is an Insignia NS-DXA1 box.

    Thanks, ed

  2. I have been using an Insignia digital converter for about 90 days with everything working fine. Today it now has no sound. Picture is fine and tv speakers are fine without the converter. Any ideas?

  3. I, after much time and work, got the Insignia NS-DXA1 to work and was able to record a TV program to my DVD recorder. However, if I am not around to activate the Insignia it will not "turn on" to allow a scheduled recording. Is there a work around or solution to have the converter box "turn on" when a program is scheduled for recording and I'm not there?

  4. I have been using an Insignia box since right after the switch to digital. After much frustration and some outside help, I finallyhave it so that it works fairly well, although I often have to adjust the antenna when I change stations. It's frustrating that I can't watch one TV show and record another at the same time, the way I used to do. But the worst thing is the way the box turns itself off. If I go out for the evening and leave the box turned on so it will record a program, I come home and find that the box has turned itself off and I've recorded a whole program of "snow." I checked at Best Buy (where I bought the box) and they were no help.

  5. We have been using an Insignia box since the conversion and up until now did not have a problem. We turned it off to watch a DVD the other day and now we cannot get it to turn back on - manually or remotely. Has anyone else had this problem?

For the person who recorded "snow" - in one of the setup menus, there is an always on feature that you need to select. Since I cannot turn on my box, I cannot tell you exactly where it is.

  6. I have had the converter box from the start of the conversion, I love it except for the fact that I can't turn on my TV with it. Either I've missed something or it doesnt work. Any help out there?
