Purchased 2 units. Unit 1 was defective out of the box (video output was intermittent, cycling on and off about once every second). Unit would operate for ~10 minutes at a time after applying power, after which video cycling occurred and unit had to be unplugged and plugged back in to restore operation.
Unit 2 worked OK for 2-3 weeks, then began turning off and on by itself while it was in active use, then Unit 2 developed the same problem as Unit 1.
Unit 1 was replaced under warranty with unit 3. Unit 3 failed within one week. Unit 3 powers off by itself randomly. Unit will not turn back on unless it is unplugged first and then repowered. Even then, occasionally the unit will not power up unless it is allowed to rest for an hour or so.
So far, 100% failure rate. Purchase at your risk.
All units going back to Dish for replacement, again.
Mine did the exact same thing...this box does give a good picture while it's working. I would steer clear of this product. I'm on my second unit after jumping through many hoops to find out where to send the first one. Many, many phone call ending in "I'm sorry but I can't help you sir...do you have it hooked up correctly?" Last night it locked up on me and I had to unplug it to get it to respond. on second thought....it is junk. My rating is D+.
I have had similarly bad experience to two other reports - it can work fine for a while, then on several occasions I've had the video lock up and the box become unresponsive - need to power off and on to get it working again. It has also sometimes on these occasions powered itself off and on, showing the "getting guide" screen after it restarted. Dish customer support is useless. After an hour and a half on the phone I'm no closer to getting a replacement - I've given up, just not worth the effort. I suspect maybe the box is overheating; I'm going to try ventilating it a little more with air holes - nothing to lose.
Same problem with me. Bought it through Sears.com on 8/28/09, shippped OK, worked the first couple of times but now either won't power up at all or shuts off by itself after a few minutes and must be unplugged ("wait 15 seconds," says the manual)and re-plugged to get going again, but often won't do jack until I come back the next night (must need to "rest"). Owner's manual refers you to an 800 number with a dead-end (solicitation to subscribe to DISH network). This must be a hit and miss item b/c my friend got on like a year ago for $250 (I paid $270 for mine) and raves about it.
I have the same problem with the timers (will change or outright erase them arbitrarily, feature is unreliable) and has "hung" on me several times: is on but no signal and non-responsive, have to unplug and re-set up. Bought it at the same time as a Zinwell ZAT 970A because they both had timers (for my VCR's), and the Zinwell is FAR superior and reliable. Wish I could get my money bak ob this one!
